Interaction 19: Seattle!

Have you heard the news? Our annual, global gathering for 2019, will be taking place just up the river and through the woods, in beautiful Seattle! February 10th thru the 14th.

We’re thrilled, to say the least. In the weeks and months ahead, we’ll be crafting programming to guide and encourage Portland UX’ers in crafting talks, workshops, or panels to submit. We’re here, we’re weird—let’s barnstorm the global conversations!

All design is political, because all politics are designed. The world is a mess because a certain set of people designed it to be a mess. Now we need a different set of people to design our way out of it. This is not a choice. Regardless of whether this is what we wanted or not fascism is knocking on our front door. This is how we knock back.

Donations will be collected by IxDA PDX for The Trevor Project, Planned Parenthood, and ACLU of Oregon, with IxDA getting the refreshments, so… LET’S DO THIS PORTLAND!!!

PS: For donations larger than $50—or—if you’d like to set-up a recurring donation, please tender those transactions at the website of your preferred org, directly, and email us a PDF of your reciept. Eventbrite’s fees stink, and you’ll have more options, that way. Links to each org’s donation page, are above. pdx at ixda dot org is our email.

2017 Theme: Information Strategy and Structure

In today’s world, organizations are required to rethink how to architect and manage information to maintain a competitive and organizational edge. Many are embracing strategies that are more flexible, moving away from isolated systems and departmental silos. These organizations recognize the need for information to be structured so that it is clear, usable, findable and understandable.

But, the need for information strategy and structure extends beyond the enterprise. Whether information is architected to inform algorithms, to bring awareness to important societal challenges, or to clearly communicate available resources to help those in need; information strategy and structure plays an important role in our everyday lives.

Agenda

12pm  ·  Gather, network, pastries, coffee, and more coffee!
12:30pm – 2:05pm  · Presenters, livestreaming from Seattle
— Lunch pls bring, or venture across the way to New Seasons —
2:55pm – 3:40pm  · Presenters, livestreaming from San Francisco

LIVE From Seattle:

12:30pm – 1:30pm
Leslie Owens – Enterprise Perspectives on Information Architecture

In her role as Executive Director of MIT CISR (Center for Information Systems Research), Leslie works closely with CIOs at large global companies. In this keynote, she will examine the priorities and choices that senior leaders face today, and how those decisions may influence a firm’s information strategy. Drawing on insights from research at MIT CISR, Leslie will explore the tension that information architects experience as they try to structure information within a firm that is undergoing digital transformation.

1:35pm – 2:05pm
Nick Sweers – Personalized Help: Using IA to Create a Unique Support Experience
Nick will detail how his team, together with Expedia’s Global Learning Organization (GLO), re-engineered a bland, boring help site into a state-of-the-art support experience for Expedia’s hotel partners worldwide.

LIVE From San Francisco:

2:55pm – 3:40pm
Jorge Arango – Leaving Our Mark

Look around you. You are surrounded by physical environments — buildings, cities — that have endured the test of time. They play a large role in your ability to be effective in the world.

Digital environments, on the other hand, are among our shortest-lived artifacts: they quickly become outdated as technology evolves. And in many ways, they are taking over from physical environments as the contexts in which much we spend much of our time. Information architects can and should design that stand the test of time too.

In this closing keynote, we will look at information architecture as a discipline in the broader context of design for purpose, and how as an information architect you can leave a mark that endures.

3:40pm – 4pm

World IA Day

IxDA Portland in partnership with the IA Institute, are pleased to announce World IA day on Saturday 18th February, from noon to 5pm (yet to nail-down the exact times, but will update this post once that’s set).

RSVP on our Meetup Page.

We’ll be gathering at a location TBD, along with hundreds of our favorite people from around the world who’ll all together connect with us, virtually.

This year our theme is Information Strategy and Structure, and we’re inviting folks in Portland to contact us if they have something they’d like to present, a group project they’d like to propose, or any other ideas they’d like to share. Volunteers? We absolutely need more signups for folks to help out (especially AV folks, for the livestream)!

From the World IA Day website:

World Information Architecture Day is a one-day annual celebration hosted by the Information Architecture Institute and held in dozens of locations across the globe.

We are a community of like-minded professionals and enthusiasts who share the common goal of practicing, learning, teaching and shaping the future of information architecture. We share our thoughts, ideas, and work within an open and welcoming environment. The content created as a result of our celebration is available to everyone and we invite conversation around the work we are doing.

Interest in sponsoring this or other IxDA Portland events to keep us fed and hydrated, or to help future events? YES, please! 🙂

Thank you to World IA Day’s generous worldwide sponsors:

2016 Reboot!

We’re kicking-off the dust, plugging our networks, filling the post-it walls with programming ideas, and getting in gear to launch a new schedule packed with programming for the end of 2016, through 2017!

We’d love your feedback and participation to get us going, and what’s a reboot without a good party?

November 17th, at Jama Software, from 6-9pm

RSVP on Meetup!

Please join us in our first IxDA Portland quest: design the year ahead! We’ll provide light snacks, tasty beverages, and walls filled with ideas for programs we hope you’ll love in the months to come. We’ll ask you to whip out the old sticky notes, markers, and brain power to make these ideas better and add your own to the mix. Come, co-curate the future together, connect with old friends and new colleagues, and have a jolly ‘ol Thursday evening with us!

It is with much gratitude that we bid adieu to our dedicated + talented prior co-leads Cat and Melissa. We expect they’ll continue to work with us here and there as rescues and extra support are needed. We’re Nina Alter (new to the PDX area from SF, so most of you probably don’t yet know Nina!) and Eva Miller (been around for a while, so many of you probably do know Eva!), and look forward to connecting with all of you at future events and online.
